Although many think that the patron saint of Spain is the Virgen del Pilar, it is not so. According to Fr. José María Bordetas, "the patron saint of Spain is the Immaculate Conception of Mary, because in Spain it was a flagman in which the Church proclaimed this dogma. However, in the 18th century the Virgin of the Pilar was appointed as a patron of all Spanish -American peoples."
