This year the Church rejoices because it marks the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Fatima. Pope Francis has canonized the little shepherds, Francisco and Jacinta Martos, after the decree recognizing the miracle attributed to the intercession of both brothers, who together with Sister Lucia witnessed the apparitions of the Virgin in Portugal in 1917, was approved. The miracle that will allow the canonization of both little shepherds is the healing of a Brazilian child.

Surely we have all heard about the apparitions of Fatima. The Virgin appeared to the little shepherds 6 times. In the third apparition, on July 13, Our Lady revealed the Secret of Fatima to them. According to the chronicles, Lucía turned pale and screamed in fear, calling the Virgin by her name. There was thunder and the vision ended. During the time period in which the apparitions took place, the three children had to face misunderstandings from their families and neighbors, and persecution by the deeply anti-clerical Portuguese government. But they accepted these difficulties with faith and courage: “If they kill us, it doesn't matter. Let's go to heaven," they said. After the apparitions, the three little shepherds continued their normal lives, until the death of Francisco and Jacinta.
