Starting this year, Pope Francis will have only one prayer intention prepared for each month. However, he plans to announce a second prayer intention, considered “urgent,” at the first Sunday Angelus of each month.
This was announced by the Apostleship of Prayer, the Pope's global prayer network, in a statement.
This second sentence, the organization explained, will be “related to current events or urgent needs, such as disaster relief.”
“The request for urgent prayer will help mobilize prayer and action related to the urgent situation,” explained the Apostleship of Prayer, indicating that this organization will publish “these urgent prayer intentions on its website as soon as we receive them from the Vatican.”
In an article published on the Apostleship of Prayer blog, Father James Kubicki, national director of the organization in the United States, explained that the Pope's decision is related to "the speed of communications in the digital age."
Father Kubicki noted that the Pope will make the announcement of this intention “during his Angelus message on the first Sunday of the month.”
