Today we celebrate Palm Sunday. On this day, Catholics around the world go to churches in order to bless their branches. This day marks the beginning of Holy Week and is commemorated around the world in different ways. The celebration of Palm Sunday is based on passages from four gospels (Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-40 and John 12:12-19) which deal with the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Christ entered the city riding a donkey, even though he knew the suffering that awaited him.
In the gospel of Saint John it is said that when Jesus returned to Jerusalem, large crowds “took palm branches and went out to meet him and cried: Hosanna, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord and King of Israel.” To commemorate Palm Sunday, Catholic faithful participate in processions with their palms. On this day a special mass is celebrated during which the gospel that corresponds to the chapters of the Passion of Christ is read and that recalls the experiences of Jesus from the Last Supper to his crucifixion and subsequent resurrection.
