On this World Refugee Day (June 20, 2019), the Migrants with Rights Network launches a call to policy makers and citizens to act against any criminalization of humanitarian support provided to migrants and refugees, defend the rights of migrants and refugees, and promote welcoming societies where solidarity, encounter, coexistence and respect are at the center of policies and the social agenda. “There are many signs of hope and from them we want to build the future.”

In a press release published, the Network highlights that they are witnessing the growing tendency to hinder and stigmatize the humanitarian assistance that aid networks and volunteers provide to migrants in danger. There are several examples of this, including cases of prosecution of members of non-governmental organizations for having launched search and rescue operations in Mediterranean waters.
From Migrants with Rights they remind us of the breath of Pope Francis who encourages us to build bridges, to create a culture of encounter and to open our door to those people who are on the path, who are most vulnerable, because, as he expresses in his message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, “the presence of migrants and refugees, as well as vulnerable people in general, today represent an invitation to recover some essential dimensions of our Christian existence and our humanity, which run the risk of being numbed by a lifestyle full of comforts.”

The Migrants with Rights Network – which integrates more than 400 institutions, delegations and communities throughout the country, and mobilizes more than 90,000 people, including volunteers and hired professionals – has accompanied about 3 million people in situations of social vulnerability.
