On March 12, Maria Inmaculada College Rio de Janeiro celebrated 102 years of its foundation. Congratulations to everyone who helped build this story. The Colégio Maria Imaculada/RJ was founded in 1920, it is one of the units of the Conceptionist Teaching Network. It is maintained by the Congregation of the Conceptionist Missionary Sisters of Education. It all started because the Congregation of the Conceptionist Sisters of Education realized that it needed to expand its communication with other states and Rio de Janeiro would also facilitate communication with Spain.

a congregation Consolidated
At that time, the Conceptionists were already in the interior of Brazil, in Minas Gerais, in the cities of Machado, Passos and Guaxupé. Mother Vicenta Franco, one of the first sisters who formed the community of Rio de Janeiro, tells us about the first steps. On March 11, 1920, we left Madrid, Spain, heading for Rio. The sisters who attended were: Brígida Martin, Dominica Marino, Maria Allúe and Vicenta Franco. They embarked in Cádiz, on the ship “Balmes”.

After 21 days of crossing they arrived in Santos, where they were received by brothers Norberto and Andrés from the Congregation of the Fathers of the Sacred Heart of Mary, the Claretians. They accompanied them to São Paulo, where they stayed for a few days. They arrived in Rio de Janeiro on April 11 at 8:00 p.m. They went to the community of the Claretian Fathers in Meier to meet Father Ozamiz and see the house where they would live. They needed to look for real estate to establish themselves, they stayed for a long time in the house of a family and on May 24, 1920, the sisters settled at Rua São Francisco Xavier, 935.
The early years, an all-girls college
In the first years of its foundation, the College was exclusively female, operating from the 1st to the 4th year of the Primary Course. In 1938, the boarding school was established. And already in 1951 the Gymnasium Classroom was implemented. The educational work over the years since its foundation has undergone various modifications in the physical facilities until the current construction. In the same way, it was adapted to the changes in Teaching proposed by the Ministry of Education to the needs of the students. All this for their positive entry into the Society, ranking among the best Teaching Establishments in our city.
